Before the two weeks free training I was training kickboxing, but wasn’t enjoying the classes, so I thought about trying out this instead. I was nervous as it is something very different to what I had done before, so I was not sure what to expect from the class and was worried about being the only girl.

After the free two weeks I was more confident then I used to be, I also became more active and am healthier and fitter then I used to be and my boosted confidence has helped me in my day to day life.

Since retiring from competitive football, I have been looking for an activity that will give me an appropriate level of physical exertion and challenge. After trying numerous sports and activities, a friend of mine who trains Jiu-Jitsu at another Gracie Barra School recommended that I try it out at Gracie Barra Yeovil.

During my free two weeks I felt that the Fundamentals Class is a fantastic place to be. Learning different technique and skills within the session is well supported by the more senior and experienced club members, a nurturing culture runs naturally through the club, there are no big egos.

Sam is a wealth of knowledge, not only in terms of Jiu-Jitsu, but also in fitness and conditioning, allowing and him to help both experienced athletes and those who are just starting out/looking for a gentle introduction to physical activity.

While the quality of the physical training is fantastic, in my opinion, the real strength of Gracie Barra Yeovil is the way that people of all shapes, sizes, ability and genders are made welcome and are quickly made to feel part of the club.

In the two weeks free training at Gracie Barra Yeovil, I have learned a huge amount. In addition to the physical aspects of Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling and Grappling techniques learnt, I have also learnt to remain calm and composed while in some quite tricky situations.

In pretty much any circumstance where experiencing an unwanted physical challenge, despite previously training in boxing, kick boxing and karate, it will be the knowledge gained from Jiu-Jitsu that will be of most use to me.

When I claimed my two weeks free training, I was very unfit and had a gym membership that I rarely used because I found it difficult to motivate myself to get to the gym. I was looking to increase my strength and fitness, but I found so much more than that.

Before training, I was worried about injuring myself, however, this worry quickly left my head as the coaching ability of Sam Dunn is second to none. As long as you listen and take all instructions seriously it is a really safe sport, there is a heavy focus on using the correct technique as to avoid injury.

After every class I felt like a stronger, fitter and definitely wiser version of myself. The greatest feeling I get is sharing all of these accomplishments with a group of like-minded men and women, who you develop a team like friendship with along the way; a brotherhood.

The two weeks free training has also helped me outside of the mats (training area). In college I am able to retain content at a whole new level and I am certain this is down to the training I received at Gracie Barra Yeovil and the coaching approach that Sam Dunn takes with us.

People at work have also commented on how confident I have become, I have even won an award at work for ‘Outstanding Leadership For Non Managers’

I had always had an interest in Martial Arts and have practiced other styles in the past, but Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu interested me as it was completely different than any other Martial Art I had previously trained. Plus, the appeal of becoming a part of a close-knit community through training Jiu-Jitsu also appealed to me before claiming my two weeks free training.

I wasn’t necessarily worried about staring Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, as I had already experienced the unfamiliar feeling of walking into a new club and not knowing anyone. But for the first time I was greeted openly and made to feel very at ease and welcome by the Team at Gracie Barra Yeovil.

For me, the two weeks free training has opened my eyes to the Jiu-Jitsu way of life and has helped me to think things over in a more rational way. We are taught to relax, think about what we are doing/the steps required to get out of a bad situation and to use technique rather than brute force.

Before the two weeks free training, I felt I wanted to learn self-defence and increase my fitness. I find that the sessions are not only teaching me some great techniques but are also such a great workout that I leave the session knowing it was a good nights work, so it ticked the boxes every time.

I was concerned that I wouldn’t have the flexibility to do Martial Arts, however I was able to learn the warm up drills at my own pace and made sure that I always took part in the stretching routine at the end of each session led by our coach.

I learnt a lot of moves in the two weeks and felt more confident each visit. The training has been exciting and a great workout. The head coach is very welcoming, friendly and promotes a positive, safe training environment. In a short space of time I consider the other Team members friends, they have been so friendly and welcoming from day one.
